Artists and scholars converge to respond to urgent questions about culture, race, and social justice in The Space for Creative Black Imagination (The Space). “The Space” is an interdisciplinary Making and Research institute. It is a platform for inventing and developing paradigms and imaginings that are beyond limiting conventions of making and research, such as disciplinarity, scale, material, or process. “The Space” emerges as an important element of MICA’s institution-wide strategic plan. Our work is now in-progress. We develop concrete, tangible, and sustainable activities, events, and partnerships that are efficient and (sometimes) elegant. In these early stages of development, we seek input and feedback on how “The Space” may add value and meaning to our collective capacity for critical self-reflection, collaborative theorization, and courageous creativity. “The Space” is the first of its kind to be established and hosted by an art and design college. It builds on MICA’s legacy and tradition (since 1826) and enhances the profile of art and design through its commitment to racial justice and sustainable knowledge-making, teaching, and learning.
